Eli's babysitting guide

For the past weeks we have been learning about keeping ourselves safe, we have been given different scenarios such as responsibility, cyberbullying, and different types of abuse. Today the scenario was babysitting and I made a guide for babysitters, check it out in the link below.

Smoothie instructions

Today I wrote smoothie instructions as part of our Instructional writing. I made sure it was very descriptive with all the ingredients and materials. I made sure it had 10 steps so it was easy to read.

Scary story

This week we made scary stories based off of images from a website, I used descriptive writing to make my story more powerful, you can read in from the link below.

Shake out drill

Yesterday Greymain School took part in the 2019 New Zealand Shake out run by the Ministry of Civil Defence. Once we heard the earthquake announcement we ducked under the tables with our heads on the floor, our hands were protecting our heads in the brace position. After about a minute or so a new announcement came from intercom it said that the earthquake had ended but a tsunami was heading towards the school. Everyone in the school quickly evacuated and headed up the road. We walked up a hill into someone's long driveway, this area was classified as tsunami safe area. This massive drill was just a small part in the 2019 Shakeout, every single school in New Zealand took part in the shakeout preparing students and teachers for a possible earthquake or tsunami.

Sandwich instructions

This week I made detailed intructions for making a sandwich, this was our task for our new lesson in instructions. Our rules for these instructions are: every instruction must start with a verb, every instruction has to be specific, and they have to be in steps.

Check out my instructions here and see how to make my favourite sandwich!

End of term

This term was the first full term I had in Grey Main School. The best thing we did this term was Hanmer Springs camp, we did a lot of things there like mountain biking, orienteering, and swimming in the hot pools. I especially liked Tech this term, I learned and made a lot of things, the best Tech class was cooking class because we made orange chocolate muffins that tasted really good. For next term I'm looking up to wearable arts and I hope that's a lot of fun.

Tech creation

This week for tech I decided to change my idea on what to make in metal works, I originally was going to create a picture frame but I quickly changed my mind after I found out that the measurements were wrong for the frame. My original idea was to make a fish so I got a piece of metal and started drawing the parts out with a pencil. After cutting it out, and drilling the holes it was complete. I drafted it and created it during 1 class.

2019 Chess tournament

 Chess tournament

This term I went to the inter school chess tournament between several Greymouth schools. The tournament was split between Rookies, Juniors, Intermediates, and seniors, as thy played against each other. I was only there for a small amount of time but I could see how the tournament played out, and how long it would take. Another thing I noticed was that the chess boards were very large, as well as the pieces. That's all I could see for the time I was at the chess tournament in Grey High.

2019 Hanmer Springs Camp

Hanmer Springs camp

This year we had my first camp experience at Hanmer Springs, It took about 3 hours to get there and back. Once we got to the camp we started unpacking our stuff and ate lunch, following that we went into groups and started our activities, our first activity started at 1 O'clock and we went mountain biking, we learned how to operate the bikes and then we rode down the road to the biking path, we were there for 2 hours 30 minutes and then we went back to camp. We only had 1 activity on the first day but the next day we would have 3. Once we got back we got dressed in out togs and went to the Hanmer springs hot pools, we had a lot of fun there and we were there for about 3 hours. When we returned we had spaghetti for dinner and we did a competitive quiz in teams, then we went to bed.

The next day we had breakfast and started our other activities, including orienteering, walking up conical hill, and tree climbing. For orienteering we had to find markers around the forest trail and write them down, the team with the most points won. For conical hill we walked up and down the hill, it took about 1 hour in total, and then we went to the lolly shop with each person carrying 5 dollars. Tree climbing was quite hard even though I made it to the top of both trees. And on the last day we went to the cemetery and walked down a short trail, my experience at Hanmer Springs was good and I know other people also had fun.
